Intelligence work is in some ways like a newspaper or newsmagazine, in some like a business, in some like the research activity of a university; very little of it involves cloaks and daggers. All of it is important to national survival, and should be understood by the citizens of a democracy. In this remarkable book, an able scholar, experienced in foreign intelligence, analyzes all of these varied aspects of what is known as \

Summary This book provides an overview of the current landscape in digital rights management (DRM), including: an overview of terminology and issues facing libraries, plus an overview of the technology (including standards and off-the-shelf products). It discusses the role and implications of DRM for existing library services, such as integrated library management systems, electronic reserves, commercial database licenses, digital asset management systems and digital library repositories. It also discusses the impact that DRM 'trusted system' technologies, already in use in complementary areas, such as course management systems and web-based digital media distribution, may have on libraries. Discusses strategies for implementing DRM in libraries and archives for safeguarding intellectual property in the web environment. Key Features A practical guide that places DRM within the context of the services and practices of the library and offers guidance on getting started. An understandable overview of the technologies and standards involved in digital rights management. An overview of the DRM landscape beyond libraries, with an emphasis on how this landscape impacts libraries and shapes DRM generally. In particular, the e-learning and digital media distribution arenas are embracing DRM, with significant potential impact for libraries. Includes an emphasis not just on digital books and still images, but digital video and audio, where the need for DRM is more compelling The Author The author is Associate University Librarian for Digital Library Systems, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Grace Agnew is a noted author and lecturer on digital rights management, metadata and digital video. She is the architect of the Moving Image Collections (MIe portal, a union catalog for the world's moving images, which is co-sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA). She was a principal investigator for the NSF Middleware Initiative invitational workshop, 'Digital Rights Management for Research and Education'; she served as an advisor to the American Library Association on the technical implications of the TEACH Act and is the co-author of two books published by the American Library Association. E-book Library:"Technology & Engineering"

The third volume of the influential WWRF Book of Visions of research and trends in mobile communications has been fully updated. It includes three new chapters on flexible spectrum use, ultra-broadband convergent home-area networks, and the system concept. Visions from manufacturers, network operators, research institutes and academia from all over world are captured by the WWRF in one comprehensive single point of reference. Technologies for the Wireless Future, Volume 3 describes the expectations and requirements of a user in the ‘future wireless world’ between 2010 and 2017. This will enable readers to prioritise research topics based on the provision of cost-effective solutions. This book is ideal for researchers from both academia and industry, as well as engineers, managers, strategists, and regulators. WWRF has become highly influential on the future of wireless communication. You can see the evidence already, as many of the concepts described in the very first Book of Vision have been adopted in today’s wireless implementations. The organization brings together the long-range views of academia with the practical constraints and requirements of industry. This is a powerful combination. Mark Pecen, Vice President, Research In Motion Limited The WWRF Book of Vision series of books are an invaluable source of information for key thoughts and technology developments in wireless and mobile communication. The comprehensiveness and diversified nature of its research reports and results can prove to be a very useful tool in planning and developing the next generation network and services. Bill Huang, General Manager, China Mobile Research As mobile broadband becomes part of our daily lives, in the same way that mobile telephony has done, and helps us to support important issues such as health care, education and many other priorities, WWRF is again exploring the options for mobile and wireless systems in its' third edition of the Book of Visions. Earlier versions have helped to reach global consensus on research objectives, reduce investment risk and generate critical mass in research efforts. The third book of visions provides key insights into the international academic and commercial discussion on tomorrows' hot topics in mobile research!
